Holding up the Universe by Jennifer Niven is a realistic novel that reminds us of a very important message. It’s what's on the inside that counts. Libby Chesler is a girl who has been house bound and scared of the world in fear of being made fun of for her looks on the outside. Jack Masselin is a basketball player who works hard at being a follower and a bystander. He has to because he has a big secret. He has prosopagnosia a brain disorder that prevents him from recognizing faces. When Jack is forced to follow his friend's idea to harass Libby, they both get in trouble. During their school enforced mediation they realize they're not all that different. It’s truly a heartwarming novel that hands us a piece of knowledge that we can carry away with us for the rest of our lives.

My all time favorite book is Wonder by Raquel J. Palacio. I first read this book in 3rd grade and since then I have read it dozens of more times. A quote on the back of the book says “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” this book really adds to the meaning of the book because the book is about a ten year old boy with extreme facial deformity and had gone through over 40 surgeries by just age ten. His name is Augie. Augie had been home schooled forever because of these surgeries but this years things change up. His dad thinks he should go to middle school and Augie is ok with this concept but is still frightened because often kids scream or cry when they see him. But he becomes friends with this boy who gets to know him well and realizes even though he is different on the outside he is an amazing person on the inside. It was dark and gloomy, with leftover pieces of buildings flying everywhere. After the attack in Chicago, there’s nothing much that’s standing still. Sure, there are some buildings and streets, however there are only a few people left. As I walk up and down the streets I see all the fun memories in the exciting tall city buildings I have, well I used to have. Finally I came across my old school. I used to love dark and gloomy days like these because we didn’t even have to show up. That had me thinking about the last day I almost went to school. It was a summer day in the city. As usual I was fighting my way out of going with my mom. “BOO DOO DOO” went the tv as a news alert went on. School was canceled which made me almost as happy as an Olympian receiving the gold.
